GREATER MANCHESTER BANGLADESH ASSOCIATIONS
Nakshi Kantha Project 2021
The project was to revive Bangladeshi form of craft called Nakshi Kantha, which is diminishing in the UK. The term Nakshi Kantha is found even in medieval literatures. It is made from old clothes, saris, dhotis, curtains, table cloth, etc. Kantha ranges from utilitarian quilts to exquisitely embroidered heirlooms. It is also to tackle environmental issue by recycling old textile materials.
The project was to work with a group of women to create new work using old textile materials whilst working with professional artists. It could include hand kerchiefs, pillow cases, hand fan, praying mat, bed sheets, patch work, to telling stories through Nakshi Kantha. It has colourful patterns and designs embroidered in to a quilt with a running stitch called ‘Kantha Stitch’.
